About HDV:
With many new HDV camcorders
entering the marketplace, the need for a HDV ready Video
editing
system is growing. It is important to understand that the HDV
format generated by a camcorder, such as Sony's HDR-FX1, is
transferred over firewire in a highly compressed mepg transport
stream. Since HDV video contains 5 times the video information
of an SD (standard definition) video source this is the
only practical way to move the video over the same wire. Unfortunately,
this mpeg transport stream format is not easily
edited in. This requires the video to be transcoded
into a format that the editing software can more easily deal
with. Conversely when sending the video back to the camcorder
it must be converted back to the mepg transport stream to be
recorded to tape. In both cases this is a very CPU intensive
process . High definition Editing systems are now within
the reach of most video editors . We offer Video editing systems
based the products listed below . All out systems are optimized
with Editing video in mind.
Based on feedback from the manufacturers
of these new editing systems, and our own internal testing,
our recommendation is that the minimum configuration to adequately
meet the needs of HDV editing is a dual 3.4 GHZ Xeon system.
